Icy run

Today Anthony, Shawn and I (Drew is resting foot, Justin is under the weather)....went out for what ended up being a very icy run. Most cars were good about giving room when they could (except for the one who had a ton of room to give but didnt - felt the mirror graze past my arm). Besides putting my foot in a puddle - all in all a good run.

Total Distance: 5.5 miles
Total Time: 46:27
Total Average: 8:26

Rest tomorrow - long run planned for Saturday.

First run since Derry

Today was my first run since Sunday's race. Legs were tired but not sore which is good. Shawn, Anthony, Drew and I went out and tried out a modified route to make up five miles. We did the first mile nice and slow around 9:35 - which felt good. Legs loosened up nicely. Last mile was 8:00. Tomorrow may turn into a rest day due to the weather - but if Mother Nature decides to be nice - I'm gonna head out again tomorrow.

14th Annual Boston Prep 16 Miler Report

Today was the Boston Prep 16 in Derry NH. I drove up and picked up my bib Sunday morning. Bib #71. Not much to write about ...but HILLS HILLS HILLS. The big hill was ridiculous. I was well trained for the other hills thanks to all the hilly runs during the week that we normally do. But nothing I have done could have prepared me for that big hill.

Eastern States 20 Mile

Ok - I know I was going to wait until after the 16 miler in Derry this weekend to register but I didn't. So I have now registered for the Eastern States 20 mile run on March 29th. Starts in Kittery, ME and ends in Salisbury, MA. Seven towns - three states. This race lined up perfectly with a planned 20 mile training run. I couldn't resist.

100 Acre Pond Run

Justin, Drew and I went out for the 100 Acre Pond Run (very good hill at the midpoint).

Total Distance: 4.4 miles

Long run day at Roger Williams Park

Today Justin and I headed back to Roger Williams Park for another long run day. We met at the park even before the sun was up. It was 4 degrees out (felt like -6) when we started - and it didn't get much warmer by the time we ended. Each loop is 3.5 miles and we consistently did each in 33 minutes. I was able to do 4 loops today without too much trouble. I wore my new EMS shirt and it was great!

Quick run in snow

Went out today for a quick/easy run. With the roads in the condition they are (ice and snow) there aren't too many places to run now - so I ran to Joe's house and back.

Bart Yasso My Life on the Run: The Wit, Wisdom, and Insights of a Road Racing Icon

I forgot to post before about Bart Yasso's book so.... This book is a good read (quick too). Yasso goes into the races he's run (even a 5k at a nudist colony) and a bit about his life and how he came into running. He talks about his "invention" of the Yasso 800s. At the end he gives suggested trainings for different length races.

If you are looking for a quick and fun(ny) read Id suggest to pick up My Life on the Run: The Wit, Wisdom, and Insights of a Road Racing Icon.

Mother Nature is NOT a runner's friend this week

So it looks like Mother Nature is going to try and throw a wrench into my (and all other runners in New England) training. Today its snowing, freezing raining and all that jazz. The temperature isnt too bad for a run. BUT the high temps for the next 5 days are gonna be 29/42/21/16/13 (and thats before the wind chill). Today I may hit EMS or City Sports to pick up some cold weather gear (especially new socks) and after yesterdays long run I may pick up a clava.

Long, cold, hilly, icy beard run

Today Justin and I went Roger Williams park and did 3 loops around the park which were each 3.5 miles (+ .8 miles because of a wrong turn). Temperatures this morning were around 14 when we were running. I decided to bundle up good with compression pants and all plus my Steelers sweatshirt. This was a very difficult course with quite challenging hills. At the beginning of the second mile my beard and mustache started to accumulate ice. Who knew? And by the end of the run, the ice was very visible on my face in a couple places. When I got home my sweatshirt was drenched in sweat. Guess I need to find some other kind of outer layer for my 16 miler cause from the looks of the weather in Derry, NH its gonna be cold.

First run of the year - Fort Pierce, FL

Since I didnt party too hard last night I was able to get a good run in. It was a bit warmer in Ft. Pierce than it was in Orlando. I left Thom's house, turned south on 25th st, then left on Bell, left on Oleander, left on Virginia, left on 25th and then back to Thom's house. Fairly decent run - but it was hot.
